GYIN GAMBIA CELEBRATES GLOBAL YOUTH DAY, LAUNCHES ‘I AM A GYINER’ CAMPAIGN

The Global Youth Action Network (GYIN) last week held a forum at the Voice Newspaper in Serrekunda to celebrate Global Youth Day and launch a campaign dubbed ‘I am a GYINer” aimed at releasing the potentials of young people.

Speaking on the occasion, Modou Joof, communications officer of GYIN, said the network was launched in 2011 by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in partnership with Phelps Stokes - a US-based non-profit organization.

He reiterated the importance of the launching, saying “the central event of each ‘I am a GYINer’ national campaign is a business-oriented competition, which has two categories: best cultural product and best socially conscious business”.

The best socially conscious business seeks an existing business that exemplifies the belief that businesses should respect and enrich their communities and environments, while the other seeks a service or product that exemplifies the country’s culture or locally available resources, explained Mamadou Edrissa Njie, GYIN national coordinator.

He called on the youth to be part of the campaign, saying they can only “truly become contributing and economically successful members of the community with recognition and support from established organizations”.

Meita Touray, GYIN Gambia’s secretary general, underscores the importance of celebrating International Youth Day, saying it is a day to develop and engage in partnership with the youth.

Young people continue to face global challenges that are stemmed from economic hardship, marginalization and unemployment, she said.

Miss Meita Touray Secretary General of the Global Youth Innovation Network-Gambia better known as GYIN-Gambia, who is also a Reporter with the Daily Observer Newspaper has been invited to attend the fourth Africa Carbon Forum (ACF) which is schedule to place in the Ethiopian Capital Addis Ababa from the 18th-20th April 2012.  Miss Touray on Tuesday 17 April, 2012 left Banjul International Airport for Ethiopia. 

The Forum organisers are the African Development Bank (ADB), International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), UNEP Risø Centre, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), World Bank and its World Bank Institute, and is supported by the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Agency.

GYIN secretary general attends Global Greens Congress

The secretary general of Global Youth Innovation Network – The Gambia, Miss Meita Touray, on Tuesday, left for Dakar, Senegal to attend the third Global Greens Congress, which is the first in Africa.

The congress, to be held from 27^th March to 1^st April, aims at enhancing and empowering the network between young green activists and organisations around the world, work on a green vision and an action plan for Global Young Greens network, and women empowerment in Africa, amongst others.  The congress is hosted by the Fédération Démocratique des Ecologistes du Sénégal (FEDES) in partnership with the African Green Federation and the Global Greens Coordination,

Miss Meita Touray has been selected by Global Greens to be part of its Global Greens congress delegates.

Shortly before leaving, Ms Touray expressed delight for her nomination as a delegate for the Global Greens Congress, which attracts participants from all over the ‘Green world’ with different cultures, diverse histories, and different languages but all united by a sense of global citizenship and committed to common political values and ideals.
